Reports To: Assistant Superintendent
The Director of Transportation is responsible for the organization, administration, and supervision of the district transportation department and ensures compliance with all state laws, regulations, and district policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, organize, and supervise the work of school bus drivers, mechanics, and other staff responsible for the safe transportation of students
Evaluate all transportation personnel and make staffing recommendations as needed to the Superintendent
Assign routes, schedule employee shifts, review and approve time cards, trip sheets, overtime, vacation, sick leave, etc.
Oversee and coordinate driver chemical screening with administration office staff
Coordinate with administrators, directors, and special program staff to meet the transportation needs of student groups and other district events.
Perform road checks during periods of inclement weather and advises the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
Coordinate the purchase, allocation, storage, inventory and care of all transportation vehicles and equipment
Investigate all bus accidents or near accident to determine cause and prevent reoccurrence
Serve as liaison between Drivers and Principals concerning bus discipline issues
Develop and implement a plan for inspection and maintenance of vehicles and other transportation equipment
Prepare and maintain transportation records and reports
Drive a school bus for assigned routes or trips as needed
Make recommendations to the Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent that may improve the safety, efficiency, or basic operations of the transportation department
Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent
High school diploma or GED
Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with school bus endorsement
Clean background check
Knowledge of Department of Transportation regulations and Arkansas traffic laws
Basic knowledge of auto mechanics preferred
Be able to lift 50 lbs.
Safely operate a variety of tools including power tools
Bending, standing for long periods of time, climbing under and on bus, working in confined spaces, stoop, and squat
Continuous exposure to outdoor elements and bus shop environment
Be drug and alcohol free from the time required to be ready to work until relieved from the responsibility for performing work and/or any time when performing a safety-sensitive function.
